Fans flocked to the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago as Tori Amos brought her In Times of Dragons Tour to the city.
It’s not every day that an artist such as Tori Amos comes to town, so when she does, you make sure you get yourself along to witness the extravaganza. Even as the show opener, Bartees Strange, was on the stage performing his opening set for the evening, the line to get into the venue still stretched along the entire block in both directions. Fans lined up at the box office and could be seen outside the venue on their phones, checking out resale sites for tickets in a last-minute attempt to get in to see the icon.
It’s been almost 35 years since Amos released her debut album, Little Earthquakes, and it’s clear her music still has as much pull and relevance today as it did in the 90s. Her brand of feminism and sociopolitical themes speak just as loudly today, if not more so.
As Tori’s band took their positions on the stage and the venue lights dimmed, the energy and excitement in the room were palpable. The band is comprised of John Evans (bass, musical director) and Earl Harvin (drums), along with her trio of “musical angel witches” – Liv Gibson, Deni Hlavinka, and Chicago’s own Hadley Kennary. As the three vocalists began to sing, the anticipation grew until Amos finally stepped out onto the stage to loud cheers from the ample-sized crowd.
Each show on this tour is kicked off with “Fire to Your Plain” and “Shush.” From that point on, it’s anybody’s guess what’s in store for the rest of the setlist. While the Chicago crowd was not treated to hits such as “Cornflake Girl” or “Crucify,” they did, however, get tour debuts of “Way Down” and “Take to the Sky,” the latter of which included a snippet of Carole King’s “I Feel the Earth Move.”
Tori Amos worked her magic on the Chicago crowd, casting her spell and captivating the crowd from the very first note. Her voice is still as beautiful and enchanting as ever, and she clearly still has the same attraction 35 years on. She is still every bit the force to be reckoned with.
The In Times of Dragons Tour has dates scheduled throughout August and is set to wrap on September 2 in Woodinville, WA. As we’ve already said, a performer like Tori Amos does not roll into town every day, so make sure you secure your tickets for this one as soon as you can. It’s an ethereal treat you just can’t miss!
