On what was an unusually cold night, Five Finger Death Punch brought the heat to Virigina Beach with their 20th Anniversary Tour.
What was to be the final show of the season at Virginia Beach’s outdoor concert venue turned out to be one that left many wondering if they should have brought their winter coats with them. Nevertheless, fans of the heavy metal band Five Finger Death Punch were not about to let a little cold, rainy, windy weather dampen their spirits. They were there to rock.
Kicking off the chilly evening was Detroit rock band Eva Under Fire. With an absolutely commanding presence, singer Eva Marie did not let the strong winds blowing through the venue take center stage. Instead, it was almost as if she channeled the intense weather’s energy into her own, as her vocals belted out loud enough to drown out the wind and rain. The band managed to run through an impressive setlist in a short amount of time, making sure to include a cover of “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” as well as their hit song “Blow” and newest single, “Villainous.” The band’s set was an absolute powerhouse of a performance that helped get the crowd’s blood pumping early.
Next on the lineup was outlaw country act Cody Jinks. What was definitely a turn from the rock sounds of Eva Under Fire, the honky tonk country was a fun change-up. Although the drastic change in sound may not have made much sense on paper, it was clear that the crowd was into it. Sometimes it can be fun to shake things up and include the unexpected, such as a gritty country act in the midst of rock and metal heavy hitters.
Finally, it was time for Five Finger Death Punch to take the stage. Despite the weather’s best efforts to halt the evening’s fun, the Las Vegas metal band brought the fire. Literally and figuratively. Even with temperatures dropping to the mid-40s, the crowd and band were unfazed. Five Finger Death Punch is one of those bands that truly never disappoint during their live shows, as their energy on stage and engagement with the crowd is truly something to behold.
Kicking off their set with a powerhouse of a song like “Welcome to the Circus” was just what Virginia Beach needed that night. Ivan Moody practically flowed across the stage, interacting as he always does with fans on the barricade and even further out. Moody is the master of crowdwork, and it’s apparent just how much he enjoys doing so. That energy continued as the band moved into one of their newer tracks, “Eye of the Storm,” which was incredibly fitting considering the weather earlier in the evening.
Along with Moody, longtime band members Zoltan Bathory and Chris Kael also know how to hype up the crowd. They were constantly moving across the stage, making sure fans on either side of the venue had a chance to interact with them. There were also moments when the two would come together and have little silly moments with one another. It’s one of those visuals that will absolutely draw a big smile out of a fan looking on.
The set did an incredible job of showcasing the range of Five Finger Death Punch’s 20-year discography. Ranging from newer songs like “Legacy” and “De Oppresso Liber,” to older hits like “The Bleeding” and “Never Enough,” to popular tracks like “Jekyll and Hyde” and “Wrong Side of Heaven,” this setlist had it all.
The whole show did a remarkable job of highlighting the band’s 20th anniversary. From playing newer hits to well-loved classics, Five Finger Death Punch is a band that brings power to the stage every single time. They’ve had an incredible 20 years so far with no signs of stopping any time soon.
The 20th Anniversary Tour wraps up soon in Bristow, Virginia at Jiffy Lube Live on October 23.
