Alter Bridge brings 22 years and eight studio albums to the mighty Motor City for an epic night of memories!
Electrically dangerous… best describes the scene unfolding in downtown Detroit as hundreds of Alter Bridge-crazed concertgoers snake around the legendary Fillmore Detroit, awaiting night number five of the U.S. leg of the What Lies Within Tour. Fans of all ages proudly sport vintage tour shirts, clutch concert swag from the merch line, and buzz with anticipatory energy as house lights glow above the sold-out venue. Fathers stand beside sons, longtime rock veterans mingle with younger fans discovering the band for the very first time, and the entire block hums with the type of pre-show electricity only arena-caliber hard rockers can generate. Tonight, the Florida-born juggernaut arrives in the Big D… Motown… armed with tracks from their latest sonic sledgehammer, Alter Bridge, along with enough classic material to rattle the bones of every rocker packed into this historic hall. Welcome to a night you will never forget!!!!
Fast forward to game time…
9:02 PM and darkness slowly bowls over The Fillmore as the house lights dim and four shadowy phantoms glide across a wash of icy blue light. We can make out drummer Scott “Flip” Phillips settling behind his mighty kit, while bassist Brian Marshall and guitarist Mark Tremonti take to their battle stations. Suddenly… a spotlight ignites center stage as frontman Myles Kennedy steps from the shadows like a jungle cat closing in on his prey. The crowd detonates with an ear-deafening roar as Alter Bridge erupts into “Silent Divide.” Tremonti tears off a heapin’ hunk of that crunchy riff while sporting the first epic guitar face of the night as Kennedy’s soaring vocals thunder through the theater walls like a finely tuned jet engine wrapped in velvet.
Kennedy addresses the crowd, “Good to see you, Detroit! You guys are in a good mood… I like it!” The band follows Myles’ direction and barrels directly into “Addicted to Pain,” followed by the crushing anthem “Cry of Achilles.” Tremonti and Kennedy lock into a deliciously nasty one-two guitar combo, firing crispy riffs and face-melting solos into the flock of fists-pumping faithful. Meanwhile, Marshall and Phillips keep the rhythm section deep in the pocket, driving the pulse of the night like a runaway freight train with no brakes. Cellphones rise skyward as fans attempt to preserve every glorious second of this hard rock sermon. “Open Your Eyes” arrives early, with Kennedy orchestrating one of the night’s first massive crowd movements. Smiling toward the balcony, the frontman steps away from the microphone and commands the troops… “Now YOU sing it!” Instantly, The Fillmore erupts into a thunderous “woah oooh ooooo oooo… wooo oooh oooh ooooeeyeaaahh” harmony that rattles throughout the historic theater like a drunken hard rock choir assembled by the gods themselves.
“Fortress” rolls out next, and The Fillmore damn near levitates. Kennedy stalks the stage, frequently leaning toward the barricade to share singalong moments with fans while Tremonti attacks his fretboard with absolute surgical fury. Before launching into “Burn It Down,” Kennedy pauses and points directly toward Tremonti with a grin. “This guy here has a fair amount of history in this region… so will you please give it up for Mr. Mark Tremonti!” Detroiters respond with a deafening roar as Tremonti steps forward to handle lead vocal duties. Keeping everyone on their toes, Myles steps into the spotlight to provide a very impressive guitar solo, pulling deep from his bluesy and soulful roots with licks that would make even the legends grin. Eagle-eyed guitar nerds may also notice Tremonti’s subtle tribute to one of metal’s fallen legends. Affixed to his signature Paul Reed Smith model sits a sticker honoring Dimebag Darrell bearing the years 1966–2004 — a quiet but powerful salute to one of the guitarist’s longtime inspirations.
The emotional gears shift as Alter Bridge slows things down with “Wonderful Life” and the always powerful, soul-stirring “Watch Over You.” Thousands of voices unite into a heavenly chorus of bar-room angels as Kennedy gently guides the audience through every tear-jerking moment. Cellphones shimmer throughout the theater like tiny stars hanging in the heavens. “In Loving Memory” casts an ocean of glowing blue light as Kennedy opens the emotional ballad… alone and armed with his acoustic guitar. The audience falls into a near-hypnotic trance, swaying softly while following every lyric word-for-word. Then comes the chorus… and suddenly every single voice inside The Fillmore croons together in one massive, emotional release. Quite honestly, it may have been the greatest impromptu chorus performed by complete strangers this reviewer has ever witnessed.
But don’t get too comfortable… because this Detroit crowd came to ROCK… and ROCK they shall!
Screech goes the record as Flip detonates the unmistakable hammering drum intro to “Metalingus,” instantly alerting the hungry horde to the ass-slapper inbound. Kennedy flashes a devilish grin toward the crowd, points into the sea of raised fists, and unleashes the opening lyrics as The Fillmore explodes into full-blown chaos. Fun fact for the wrestling crowd out there — this song became the entrance theme for the legendary WWE pro-wrestler Edge, and it still hits like a steel chair to the soul!
Just when Detroit thinks the night has finally emptied the tank… the lights dim once more… but NO says Alter Bridge!
Kennedy emerges beneath a lone spotlight and begins performing a haunting ode to The Beatles’ “Blackbird,” delicately fingerpicking the iconic melody before seamlessly transitioning into Alter Bridge’s own legendary masterpiece “Blackbird.” What follows is a ten-minute… XXL jam-tastic performance that stretches into a breathtaking musical odyssey. Tremonti delivers a flat-out masterclass in axe-wielding shred-fu while Kennedy’s golden pipes soar with heaven-like resonation through the historic theater. Every note feels enormous… his solo strikes like lightning. The Fillmore crowd stands absolutely mesmerized as the band transforms the song into a spiritual out-of-body experience worthy of its legendary status.
But Alter Bridge still has one final knockout punch remaining…
“Isolation” closes the evening with a blistering hard rock exclamation point as Tremonti continues to melt off what’s left of his smoking fretboard while Phillips hammers the kit like the unrelenting God of Thunder himself! This sold-out crowd responds with one final eruption of fists, screams, before the band makes a grand exit and sends a flurry of guitar picks into the swarm of appreciative rock goblins!
Alter Bridge delivers a Loud Hailer recommended concert experience that is pulse-pounding, emotionally charged, and absolutely overflowing with rock ‘n’ roll horsepower.
