Kansas-born brother duo known as The Floozies brought the electrofunk, and a sweet light show, to The Caverns in Pelham, TN.

Just off of Interstate 24, not far from the land of Bonnaroo, you will find winding roads with small signs pointing you towards The Caverns, a live music venue in a living cave that caters to everyone from hippies to headbangers. The venue is a naturally occurring amphitheater just inside the mouth of Big Mouth Cave in Pelham, Tennessee, and this weekend, Pelham got funky!!

Inside the cave, the floors and the air are damp, and you get the occasional large drops of water from above, but it traps in the excitement of the pending show and gives an almost otherwordly atmosphere. After being rescheduled THREE times thanks to COVID-19, fans were extra ready to get down in the literal coolest venue in the state – the cave remains 59° year-round.

Sunsquabi, a Colorado-based electrofunk trio, took the stage and got everyone wiggling instantly with their mix of electronic dance music and classic jam band that’s just infectious. Making sounds in the same vein as Papdosio and Late Night Radio, Sunsquabi has been big on the scene for years, and has done all the big festivals and played to sold-out Red Rocks crowds.

Sunsquabi played one of their biggest tracks, “Just a Little,” slowing it down just for a second to be vibey but when the intro ends they had the whole place bouncing with smiling faces and outstretched arms reaching into the foggy, neon-colored air. One song evolved into another as jams do, playing another favorite “Anytime” and the energy never faded.

There were many grand reunions of show friends that hadn’t seen each other since before the pandemic and the sea of humans under the cave ceiling just kept growing under the thick haze. Playing “Anytime” and “Cinnamon” fans boogied with them until the very last chord.

During the set change, the crowd enjoyed some sing-alongs while they loaded in a big ole drumset to prepare The Floozies to take us on a funkadelic journey. This live electronic funk duo is made up of the Kansas brothers Matt and Mark Hill. Somewhere between roots influenced by the Kansas City jazz tradition and modern electronic music you will find this fun-loving, Hawaiian shirt-wearing set of brothers that can’t wait to take you on a laser-infused ride through their discography.

They started their set off pretty heavy and they played through some of their most loved tracks like, “Funk Jesus,” the title track from their 2017 album Nothing to Lose, and the 2013 throwback “Stuntin.” They threw all red lights for the heavy-hitting collab with KC rapper Tech N9ne, ”Till Gone Day.”

One thing that sets The Floozies apart is the incredible laser show they bring. Combine the haze machines and the lack of circulation inside the cave, the lasers were almost tangible and the lights kept mouths hanging open the whole night.

In the second half of their set there was a heartfelt sing-along to Queen’s “Fat Bottom Girls,” and the brothers ended the show with a dramatic encore. Matt lay down on his back playing some sweet riffs and Mark rose from his drum throne to bang out some beats onto Matt’s guitar. The brothers brought the groove and good time they’re so popular for, and the cave and the lasers did the rest to create the best electronic funk experience Tennessee has seen in a long time.
