Muse brought the Wow! factor to Tinley Park’s Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre, as well as the summer party vibes with The Temper Trap and Bloc Party.
It was a packed lineup, with three very different styles of bands scheduled to perform for the Tinley Park crowd. First up was the Australian four-piece indie rockers, The Temper Trap. They might have only had time to perform five songs, but they made sure those five counted. Singer Dougy Mandagi announced that their fourth studio album, Sungazer, had just been released that day. It’s their first are album in a decade, and they performed three songs from it. They, of course, included a performance of their huge hit “Sweet Disposition,” which had the audience singing and swaying along. They certainly brought the atmospheric vibes to the evening.
Before Bloc Party took to the stage, the amphitheater was filling up nicely. There were a number of Bloc Party fans donning their t-shirts and saying how they were there to specifically see them. They have a new album coming out in September, and they treated the Tinley Park crowd to two songs from it, “Coming on Strong” and “Love Bombs.” By the time they performed “Banquet,” the crowd was well and truly warmed up, and many could be seen dancing along.
If you’ve never seen Muse perform live, it is definitely something you need to add to your bucket list and complete asap. They are a band who come to life on stage. Although the Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre’s stage is a lot smaller than the ones you would usually see them perform on, this did not diminish their performance at all. While it might not be the full production that we have seen in recent years during their shows at the United Center, this was anything but a stripped-back show. They had an impressive stage setup that added to the whole aesthetic of the show, with moving video modules and lights that commanded your attention. At this point, it’s almost as though the stage is a full-blown fourth member of the band now.
The Wow! Signal Tour is aptly named, because WOW this show was impressive! They are still in the early days of this tour, and they are already keeping fans on their toes by switching up the setlist. Up until this show, they had been opening with “Hexagons,” but this was pushed back a little further into the set. They also included “Map of the Problematique” and “Stockholm Syndrome,” which have been coming and going in other shows. Usually, bands tend to keep you waiting for their most popular songs, but not Muse. They performed “Supermassive Black Hole” very early in the set, to which the crowd erupted.
No matter how many times you see Muse live, their shows will never be boring. Each tour is completely different from all the others before it. They always give their all. The fact that Matt Bellamy can perform these songs live in the first place is impressive, but the fact that his voice holds up and he can still hit those incredible notes night after night is a whole other level.
This is one of those shows where you don’t need to be an avid follower of the band or know every word to every song to be drawn into the performance and enjoy it. But rest assured, you will certainly leave the show as a fully fledged fan.
The Wow! Signal Tour is only just beginning and will run stateside until August 31st, where it will wrap at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. It will then head to Europe from November. With so many dates scheduled, this is your reminder to go and buy those tickets now.
