Rock legends Cheap Trick brought an epic sold-out performance to Long Island, NY, with support from Dallas-based alt-rockers Olive Vox.
Opening the night was Olive Vox, an alternative rock band with a bit of punk rock style from Dallas, Texas. They hit the stage at 7:30 PM sharp, coming out strong with a good presence and energy. Attendance was good, considering they were opening for an enthusiastic Cheap Trick crowd, and they were received well for their performance. Having a sound and style of their own, it had appeared to grow on the onlookers as they became more engaged. As the band ripped through their set, it was clear why they were there, opening the night with their high energy. If you want to catch a newer band that is definitely gaining momentum and certainly will be on the radar, check them out if they come through your area.
The Paramount was packed front to back, side to side. It was about time for the legendary Cheap Trick to hit the stage. The lights dimmed as they hit the stage at 8:20 PM, and the fans were clearly ready as cheers filled the room. They kicked off their set with the classic “Hello There” from their second studio album, In Color. The crowd was dialed in as Rick Nielsen hit those first notes. Frontman Robin Zander took full control, showcasing superb stage presence as the fans sang along. They were very much engaged and eager for more, as the band carried on through their set. They played many deep cuts throughout the evening, including all the crowd pleasers such as “The Flame,” “Surrender,” and “I Want You To Want Me,” which were all very well received. Rick Nielsen introduced their new song, “Twelve Gates,” the first single from their upcoming album All Washed Up, scheduled for release on November 14. The crowd clearly liked what they heard.
It’s not hard to believe Cheap Trick has released 21 studio albums, as members Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson, and Daxx Nieslen are relentless and not showing any signs of stopping anytime soon. Rick is one guy who is in a class of his own, as he always has been, with everything from his mic stand loaded with picks from top to bottom, his checkerboard style and stage presence, and his vast arsenal of custom guitars. He rocked them all, almost changing up every song.
After playing the final song of their set, Rick, as he usually does, threw out two handfuls of picks into the crowd as fans rushed to grab them off the floor to have a personal piece of memorabilia to take with them. Robin then thanked the fans for coming out and spending the evening with them as the lights dimmed, they exited the stage, and the crowd cheered for more. They returned minutes later for their encore and performed songs “Auf Wiedersehen,” “Dream Police,” and, as always, closing out the night with “Goodnight.” The fans were, without a doubt, content with the night as the place was still buzzing as they exited the building.
