Yungblud at The Fillmore in Detroit, MI

Yungblud gets wild crowd dancing and singing all night long on his Yungblud – The World Tour with support from Sawyer Hill.

Arkansas musician Sawyer Hill kicks the evening off with a 40-minute set of alternative rock, with some elements of blues and pop. His deep voice certainly stands out and is not common these days in the rock scene. With a gap-toothed smile and long hair that flies about, he has the young, sold-out crowd cheering wildly early on. Songs like “Firestarters,” “For The Hell Of It,” and “Need Me Now” kick it off.

Sawyer is backed by Blake Doyle on guitar, Joshua Larson on bass, and Leandro Walter on drums. Joshua and Leandro lay down a solid low end with catchy beats, and Blake is showcased on many songs, as he tears through the leads. They take it up a notch with “Aiming at My Head” and escalate it to the next level with a rousing rendition of Johnny Cash’s classic “Folsom Prison Blues.”

On several occasions, Sawyer expresses how thankful they are for being on this tour and cites that the last time they were in Detroit, they played for less than 100 people. Their fanbase is sure to expand after this tour. “Masochistic Lover,” “Nothing Matters When I’m With You,” and “Look at the Time” wind it down, but keep the crowd fired up. They close out the set with “High on My Lows,” which has the crowd clapping overhead, while Sawyer jams on the lead guitar toward the end. The crowd shows their appreciation with a huge round of applause. It is a great start to get everyone warmed up for the evening.

UK musician Yungblud has been having quite a year so far. A highly rated new album, Idols, a mesmerizing, career-elevating performance at the Back to the Beginning concert in honor of Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne, rubbing elbows with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry during another performance honoring Ozzy at the MTV Video Music Awards, and a US tour that is completely sold out. The fans tonight are waiting in anticipation for him to hit the stage. The lights go out, and the crowd goes wild with screams as Yungblud takes the stage. Wearing leathers and sporting sunglasses, he kicks it off with the epic lead-off track “Hello Heaven, Hello” from Idols. It is obvious the fans are in for a treat tonight. Taking off his jacket, he pours water over his head and whips his hair, sending it spraying into the air, and then tosses water over the crowd. The fans love it. Yungblud rarely stands still, stepping out onto the speakers up front, moving from side to side, and throwing in many jumps. He really knows how to entertain and engage with his fans.

Next up is the highly popular song, “The Funeral,” which has him and the crowd dancing. After “Idols Pt. 1,” he asks the crowd, “Are you ready to go crazy, Detroit?” and they respond with cheers. “Strawberry Lipstick” has the fans singing along and clapping. Before “Lowlife,” he tells the crowd to put someone on their shoulders, and many do. During this song, there is a huge sing-along, with side-to-side waving overhead, and the crowd repeating “la-la-la.” Yungblud expresses his gratitude by exclaiming “I f**king love you all.” During “Changes,” Yungblud holds a young fan in his arms, and she gives him a big hug when he puts her down. That is a memory she won’t forget. His rendition of this song, which he says he will play every show for the rest of his life, would surely make Ozzy proud.

Following “Fire” and “Monday Murder,” he straps on a guitar and plays it while moving all over the stage during “Tin Pan Boy,” and then “braindead!.” The crowd is going crazy as he gets them to start up a mosh pit on the floor. There is no shortage of energy in the house tonight between Yungblud and the amped up fans. “Loner” closes out the main portion of the set with him leading the crowd in a lengthy back-and-forth singing of “yeah yeah yeah” and “whoa oh oh oh.”

Returning to the stage, they play “Ghosts” from the latest album. Yungblud directs the crowd in cheers and side-to-side waving. He also whips his mic around overhead, while spinning and then letting out a huge scream. A fan hands him a banner, and he holds it up, which reads “Conquer Detroit.” He loves it, as do the fans. He once again expresses his gratitude by saying, “Thank you, Detroit, from the bottom of my heart.” He also promises that he will be back next summer, which really fires up the crowd as they let out cheers. He closes out the set with “Zombie,” also from the latest album.

What a great set from this fast-rising star. The fans just can’t get enough of him. At this point, the sky is the limit as he conquers the United States and then moves on to more dates in Europe, before returning for some late November shows in Cleveland and Washington, DC.
