While Nashville is known for country music, Twin Temple brought a sound Music City doesn’t hear often – satanic doo-wop – when they stopped by The Pinnacle.
Earlier this summer, Twin Temple unexpectedly made headlines when country singer Charlie Crockett publicly announced that he had dropped the couple from the tour. In his initial statement, Crockett alluded to the fact that Twin Temple would not be part of the tour because of their satanic imagery.
That news garnered the attention of several major publications, and even the artist Jack White, who offered the duo an opening slot for his Los Angeles show. Twin Temple accepted the offer, and later this month, the pair will open for White at the Hollywood Palladium on September 29.
The Los Angeles show is included in Twin Temple’s current Doomed Lovers Tour. On this run, the duo of Alexandra and Zachary James will headline their own shows and open for Danzig, as they did in Nashville. Midway through their performance, and before their new single, “Haunt,” which they performed on The Daily Show, Alexandra addressed some of the controversy surrounding the band.
“Life is kind of funny,” she said. “One moment, you’re bumped from a couple of shows for having satanic imagery. Then, the next, you’re playing The Daily Show. I just quickly want to say that here in America, we still have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and we should have creative freedom. Keep being your evil selves, Nashville.”
After being axed from a tour due to their satanic imagery, the duo embraced it, even kicking off the show with a ceremony. After making their way on stage, the duo practiced a brief ceremony, which included waving a pair of swords to the Nashville crowd. The show also concluded with another ceremony, as Alexandra drank blood from a chalice before spewing that blood back at the crowd. After that, she and Zachary embraced for a passionate kiss before the duo said goodbye to the Nashville crowd.
What made the show even more fun was the crowd’s willingness to embrace the couple. There were even audience members in the front row dressed up to support the band, which garnered several smiles and points from the couple on stage. The catchy doo-wop sound also made for plenty of catchy choruses, or as Alexandra put it, “family satanic sing-alongs.”
While Alexandra and Zachary are the stars of the show, Twin Temple’s backing band was phenomenal. Throughout the 45-minute set, the instrumentals also had a chance to shine. In fact, saxophone player Kyle O’Donnell had several moments throughout the show to showcase his skills, and he did not waste any of those opportunities.
As Alexandra and Zachary left the stage, their backing band carried out the final notes of the performance before saying their goodbyes to Nashville. When the house lights came on, there were plenty of murmurs in the crowd, with several members expressing how much they enjoyed the performance. If Twin Temple headlines a future show in Nashville, it’s safe to say that they will have quite the crowd ready for them.
