Father John Misty brings his 2025 Fall tour to the U.S, making sure to stop at Austin, Texas’ gem of a venue, Moody Amphitheater.
Joshua Tillman, better known as Father John Misty, is an indie rock artist who has been making music since the early 2000s. Father John Misty has had a successful career as a singer-songwriter as well as being a member of bands. In 2008, Tillman joined Fleet Foxes as their drummer and helped record their second album, Helplessness Blues (2011). He also worked with bands on tour, including Saxon Shore, Jesse Skyes, and David Bazan. In the studio, Tillman has contributed to albums and songs with artists such as Lady Gaga, Kid Cudi, and Lana Del Rey. Early in 2025, Father John Misty released a complete album of demos titled I Love You, Honeybear Demos, etc. The album features 11 demo versions of the tracks from his 2015 album I Love You, Honeybear.
Opening for Father John Misty is the music project Cut Worms. Max Clarke started Cut Worms in 2015 and is based in Brooklyn, New York. Cut Worms has opened for other great artists, such as Jenny Lewis and The Lemon Twigs. Clarke released his debut album, Hollow Ground, in 2018. His latest release was a single titled “Evil Twin.” The song was released in August.
Cut Worms and the rest of his touring band opened with “Take it and Smile” from the self-titled 2023 album release. They also performed “Ballad of the Texas King,” another song from the album Cut Worms. During the set, they performed a cover of The La’s “There She Goes.” Midway, Clarke introduced a new unreleased song that aligns well with his folky/indie sound. He closed his set by having his band leave the stage to perform a new acoustic song solo. His humble and brief outro thanked the crowd for coming early to see him and announced Father John Misty would be up next.
At a little after 8:30 PM, Father John Misty took to the stage. He opened his set with “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All” from his 2024 album Mahashmashana. Tillman played guitar for the first half of the song before strolling around the stage for the song’s conclusion. Between songs, Father John Misty bantered with audience members. Before starting “Goodbye Mr. Blue,” he warned the audience he might tear up because he missed his dogs, despite it only being day two of their North American leg of tour. He made sure to perform some of his throwback songs, like “Nancy From Now On,” from Fear Fun (2012) and “Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins),” from I Love You, Honeybear (2015).He brought the crowd out of the relaxed vibe by performing “She Cleans Up,” another track from Mahashmashana. “She Cleans Up” tells an absurd story about aliens, murder, and making deals with the devil. The 70s rock-inspired track, along with the flashing light production, was incredible. After a few more songs, Father John Misty left the stage, only to return for a four-song encore. Here, he performed songs “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings” and “Holy Shit.” He closed his set with his 2016 single, “Real Love Baby,” which has gained significant popularity on social media recently
