There are few things in life that are guaranteed. One of the sure bets we have is that you can walk into a Davy Knowlesshow, and all of your troubles evaporate the moment you walk through the door. If you walk in stressed, you instantly feel relaxed and happy. If you feel tired and exhausted, you are immediately energized and can’t sit still. There’s definitely some kind of sorcery at play at these shows, and we’re all for it!
Another sure thing is that you will experience an outstanding performance from three musicians who are at the top of their game. No matter how many times you see Davy Knowles live, you will always be left aghast by his guitar skills. Each time he seems to go up another level. Just when you think there’s nowhere else for him to reach, he pulls something out of the bag and excels again. We can’t tell you how many times Loud Hailer has covered a Davy Knowles show (we’ve truly lost count), and each time, we end up mesmerized by the level of musicianship.
This show was 90-ish minutes of just Davy Knowles, without an opening band. There was no messing around; just straight down to business. What made this show different from other performances was that the Evanston crowd was treated to some new music that Knowles was trying out. This has multiple benefits – the crowd gets to hear music they’ve never heard before, and, as Davy joked, no one would know (except his band) if they messed any of it up or not. It’s a testament to the quality of the new songs that the crowd immediately connected excitedly and wholeheartedly with the material. Feet were still tapping, and hands were drumming on thighs throughout the set, showing that people were clearly immersed in the previously unheard songs.
The names Davy Knowles and Space are now synonymous with each other. There’s something special about this combination that works every time. The intimacy of the room brings you closer to other fans that it really does give the feeling of being in a room with friends you haven’t met yet. Mind you, it’s also great at these hometown shows that you will always see familiar faces.
Watching Davy Knowles, Tod Bowers, and Mike Hansen perform together almost feels like you are part of a group of friends’ band rehearsal. The smiles and connection between the three of them makes you almost forget that there’s a room full of people sitting there watching as well. When a band is having that much fun on stage, it’s impossible for the smiles not to ripple across the whole room.
Having had a sneak peek at some of the upcoming new material, we can’t wait to see what Knowles has in store for his next release. If this show was meant to help weed out some of the songs, they definitely failed at that because they all received extremely positive feedback.
