While on their What We Were Born to Do Tour, Whiskey Myers brought their rock country sound to Austin’s Moody Amphitheater.
Whiskey Myers is an American rock country band from Palestine, TX. The band is made up of Cody Cannon (vocals/guitar), John Jeffers (guitar/vocals), Cody Tate (guitar/vocals), Jeff Hogg (drums), Tony Kent (drums), and Jamey Gleaves (bass). Together, the guys have been rocking out since the mid-2000s. Their newest album, Whomp Whack Thunder, was released on September 26th, the day after their show in Austin, TX. Whiskey Myers is known for their raw lyricism and electric live performances. Their sound draws inspiration from artists that span the spectrum between classic country and alternative rock. All the while, staying grounded with their blues foundation.
The night started with the first opener, Landon Smith. Smith is a Nashville-based artist from Georgia. He has seen great success thanks to TikTok and has toured with the likes of Tyler Halverson and Gavin Adcock. He debuted his first EP, Reckon So, in June. During his set, he performed his songs “Weekend” and a new song titled “Seamstress,” which Smith announced is unreleased. Smith and his band also performed a cover of TOOL’s “Sober.”
The next opening act was country folk artist Wade Bowen. Bowen is an American Red Dirt Country singer from Waco, TX. He released his first solo album in 2002, a year after his band West 48 disbanded. His most recent project is his 14th full-length album, Flyin (2024). In June, Bowen, accompanied by Cody Johnson, released an acoustic version of Bowen’s “Hidin Behind This Microphone.”During his set, he performed songs such as “West Texas Rain” from his self-titled album (2014) and “Nothing But Texas” from his new album. It appears that, regardless of whether audience members know them, songs about their home state do very well. Mid-set, Bowen and his band did an amazing country cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Woman.” In the end, he closed his set with “Sun Shines on a Dreamer” and “Saturday Night.” Bowen thanked the crowd and expressed how much love he has for the night’s headliner, Whiskey Myers, before saying goodnight.
Whiskey Myers opened their set with the rocking “Gasoline” from the 2019 self-titled album. The band is known to bring an intense energy that contests the most intense rock bands, and their night at Austin’s Moody Amphitheater was no exception. They kept the energy high with “Frogman” from Mud (2016) and “Die Rockin.”Almost to mid-set, they changed the tempo with “Broken Window Serenade.” The haunting ballad tells the story of a woman struggling with addiction and not coming out on the other side. As the night came to a close, the band brought spirits back up with “John Wayne” from Tornillo (2022) and “Bitch,” which is sung by guitarist John Jeffers. And, of course, the guys couldn’t leave without getting in the fan favorite “Stone” (2016). No one leaving a Whiskey Myers concert leaves disappointed.
