Mac DeMarco brought everything that his dedicated fans could need during his sold-out show at The Astro in La Vista, Nebraska.
Before doors opened, there were two long lines of fans waiting patiently outside the venue for the night to start. Even the cloudy, slightly chilly weather did not stop fans. One of the unique features this venue offers is an outdoor stage as well as an indoor one.
Inside, Mock Media started the night off with their lively energy. Their stage presence, combined with the colorful stage lights, was an unexpected surprise. Their sound was not something that you would have expected to be an opener for a Mac DeMarco show. Each of them seemed so connected to what they were playing. Mock Media’s upbeat songs warmed up the crowd perfectly and were fun to watch.
Next, Mac DeMarco and his band stepped out to perform “Shining” to cheering fans. The cheering continued, and even louder the second that “For the First Time” was played. The setlist flowed from one song to another effortlessly, also changing the tempo to some songs. From “Ode to Viceroy” being played a little slower, to “Salad Days” being a little more upbeat. The setlist included songs from nearly all of his albums. Some of the songs sounded slightly different than the recorded versions, which is a nice surprise and made it extra special seeing Mac DeMarco live. The crowd got involved during a few songs. A sea of the crowd’s hands were up in the air, waving back and forth during the song “On the Level.” Flashlights from cell phone cameras were waving around during “Little Dogs March.”
The contrast between the goofy personality on stage and the laid-back feel of the songs was entertaining. This included him doing a handstand to swinging the microphone wide in the middle of a song. After “Freaking Out the Neighborhood” was performed, the outro was played again. When that was over, it was played again and again. There were also times when he would say things like “this next song is called ‘My Kind of Woman,’” and then would play a different song instead. You could never really predict what would happen next.
When the beginning of “My Kind of Woman” started playing, the crowd was singing along to every word loudly. Even from a distance, it sounded like every person in the room was singing along to it. After hearing that reaction from the crowd, you could tell that the audience was eagerly waiting for that song all night.
Looking ahead, there are only a select few tour dates that are not yet sold out. Make sure to get your tickets while you still can.
