Mother by In This Moment

In This Moment returns with Mother, their first studio album since 2017’s Ritual. It is classic In This Moment and is sure to delight their fans.

In This Moment is fronted by powerhouse vocalist Maria Brink, who proves once again she is a force to be reckoned with. With six albums already, the fans have been eagerly awaiting new music from this band. Mother, set to be released on March 27th, is exactly what fans have come to expect and it showcases what this band does best. As Brink sings the songs, you begin to envision the way they will be transformed during a live performance. Known for their theatrical and elaborate stage shows as well as their deep lyrics, this album fits right in with that. The visual and the music go hand in hand and the performance only enhances the songs.

Opening with a musical interlude that is a bit brooding, the tone is set for the album before launching into a cover of the Steve Miller classic, “Fly Like an Eagle.” Starting with a cover is a bold move but the way this band transforms this song makes it totally unique and completely their own. This is not the only cover on the album. A few tracks later, there is a cover of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” featuring Lzzy Hale of Halestorm and Taylor Momsen of Pretty Reckless. This also has its own unique spin and it is a nice touch featuring two of the other more well-known female singers in the hard rock and metal genres. While not original tracks, they fit in perfectly with the album as a whole and the musical journey.

The original songs are intermixed with another interlude and they are excellent examples of what this band is known for. One of the stand-outs is “The In-Between,” the first track released which features Brink’s distinctive vocal style while telling the story. The song starts slow as she speaks the lyrics before the music comes in hard and this pattern repeats throughout the song. “Lay Me Down” and “As Above So Below” follow a similar pattern with “As Above So Below” being a little unique and unexpected for this band, having some more electronic elements to the song. This is a bit of a different sound from this band but it is refreshing here and it fits with the lyrics of the song. “God is She” is a slower track and while the distinctive vocal is heard everywhere on this album, this song really showcases Brink’s voice. It is a hauntingly beautiful vocal. The title track “Mother” is right in the middle of the album and opens strong with piano and the vocal. The imagery that it evokes is powerful and will leave the listener looking forward to seeing this song performed live. It is easy to see why this song was chosen as the title track as it seems to clearly describe Brink, while also describing how the band wants this new album to be viewed by the audience, the next chapter for them.

Brink, lead guitarist Chris Howorth, bassist Travis Johnson, guitarist Randy Weitzel, and drummer Kent Diimmel have created an album with Kevin Churko that is sure to excite the fans. The songs are full of the expected imagery and strong meaningful lyrics that are common from this band. There are soft parts and heavy moments that blend seamlessly together. The fourteen tracks have everything covered from soft to heavy, covers to interludes. It is carefully crafted and while each song tells it’s own story, the whole album takes the listener on a journey and benefits from listening to it start to finish.

Mother will be released on March 27th and it is sure to please the fans of In This Moment who will be looking forward to seeing these performed live on their upcoming co-headlining tour with Black Veil Brides.
